Notes:

1. According to the Faculty, the Chancellor was not at all impressed, and was somewhat taken aback to find that the work had been completed without design or inscription approval – essentially he was faced with a fait accompli. The correspondence contains a deal of confusion over materials and design, with the vicar apparently believing that approval was a formality, and the Diocese objecting to being regarded as a “rubber stamp”! His comment ”I think that this has to be sanctioned because of local sentiment. But it is a poor thing and some protest should be made first”.

2. This has obviously been replaced by the wood plaque H139.07

3. St. Mary the Virgin Church at Howden le Wear was built to serve the Fir Tree Parish and was consecrated October 1869. It’s official name was Fir Tree St. Mary and the church closed 27th January 2008. The building has been sold for conversion to residential housing.
