In Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension is the name of 2445 Private Joseph Henry Duncan, serving with the 1/5th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died 06/10/1915.

Joseph Henry was born at Stagshaw, Corbridge-on-Tyne, on the 23rd December 1890, the youngest son of Joseph Ferguson Duncan, and his wife Margaret Elizabeth, daughter of John Duncan.

He resided at 62 Chirton West View, North Shields, Northumberland. And was educated at Christ Church School, Queen Victoria School, North Shields and Tynemouth High School, Tynemouth, he also attended Sunderland Polytechnic College.

Joseph Henry was an Analytical Chemist employed by the Sunderland Gas Company, then the Commercial Gas Company, Wapping, London.

He enlisted in Wallsend on September 1914, (the 1/5th were stationed at Walker, Newcastle-on-Tyne), and served with the British Expeditionary Force in France. Joseph was killed near Armentieres on the 6th October 1915. He was unmarried.

"DEATHS. DUNCAN.- Killed in action in France, Oct. 6th, 1915, in his 25th year. Joseph Henry, youngest son of Mr and Mrs J.F. Duncan, 62 Chirton West View, North Shields."

Newcastle Journal Friday 15/10/1915. Roll of Honour

"News has been received of the death in action in France of Joseph Henry Duncan 5th N.F., youngest son of Mr and Mrs J.F. Duncan, 62 Chirton West View, North Shields, and formerly of Morpeth. The deceased, who was 25 years of age, was an old pupil of the Municipal High School. He was trained as a chemist, and was in the employ of the Sunderland Gas Company, after which he went to the Commercial Gas Co., of Wapping. He was a former member of the Percy Park Rugby Football Club."

Morpeth Herald 15/10/1915 repeats this obituary.

After the end of the War his parents had moved to 4 Lovaine Place, West, North Shields.
