Thompson, J.E., A/Smn., 1917
On the Arras Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/8915 Able Seaman John Edward Thompson, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 23/04/1917.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

John was born on 17th November 1894. He was working as a baker living with his father, Matthew at 3, Woodbine Terrace, Hexham when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 6th December 1915.

He joined the Nelson Battalion in France on 25th November 1916 as a trained sniper and served until he was hospitalised with trench foot on 22nd January 1917.

After rejoining the Nelson Battalion on 26th March 1917 John was killed in action on 23rd April 1917.

John Edward Thompson is remembered in Hexham on H51.03, H51.06, H51.10, H51.26, H51.46 and H51.51
