In Saint Souplet British Cemetery is the Commonwealth war Grave of 73375 Private Herbert William Clement serving with the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 23/10/1918.

Herbert William Clement was born about 1880.

He enlisted in the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (date unknown.) The 15th Battalion was initially formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in October 1914 as a service battalion and was attached to the 64th Brigade part of the 21st Division. On the Somme with the 3rd Army the 15th Battalion D.L.I. made a night advance of over 3000 yards on 23/24th August 1918 and fought again on the Hindenburg line in mid September 1918. The 13th Battalion D.L.I. attacked the reserve line near Villers-Outreaux with the 15th Battalion attacking the same day a few miles north. The 15th took part in the final advance across the Selle river at the Battle of the Selle 17-25th October 1918. It was during this battle that Private 73375 Herbert William Clement was killed in action, October 23rd 1918. He was 38 years old

His body was identified by means of a cross and his clothing. He is buried in grave l.E.9, Saint Souplet British Cemetery, Dept. du Nord, France, 6 kilometres from Cateau which is near the site of the Battle of Selle.
