On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Master Frederick William White, serving on Calliope with the Mercantile Marine who died 05/04/1917.

Master Frederick William WHITE
Mercantile Marine SS Calliope

Residing at 101 Milton Road, West Hartlepool, he was Initiated into 2981 Connaught Lodge on the 3rd September 1912; Passed 19th December 1912 and Raised on the 27th January 1913.

He died on the 5th April 1917 aged 39 and is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

SS Calliope, owned by Gladstone & Co of Middlesbrough (3829 grt), was torpedoed and sunk by the German Submarine U65, thirty five miles south west from Ushant on a voyage from Barry to Malta.

Frederick William White is remembered at West Hartlepool on W111.054 and in  W111.086 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
