On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of K/9319 Stoker 1st Class Walter Arthur Spindloe, serving on H.M.S. Bulwark with the Royal Navy who died 26/11/1914.

Walter was born on March 11th 1890 in West Hartlepool to John Spindloe, a railway guard, and his wife Elizabeth.  The family, consisting of the parents, four sons and two daughters were living at 9, Bentick Street, Stranton. Ten years later the family, augmented by another son and daughter were living at 14, Derwent Street, West Hartlepool and John was now a foreman in a local shipyard.

Walter enlisted in the Royal Navy on September 30th 1910 when he was described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall with light brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion with a scar over his left eye. His occupation was noted as being an engine cleaner.

He was posted to HMS Bulwark on August 1st 1914 and he was lost when that vessel was destroyed by an internal explosion at Sheerness on November 26th 1914 with the loss of 792 lives. His next of kin was noted as being his father, John living at 57, Clarendon Road, West Hartlepool.

His brother Frederick also died in WW1

Walter Arthur Spindloe is remembered at Hartlepool on H115.16 and H115.30, at West Hartlepool on W111.009,  W111.054 and W111.086 page 33 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
