On Tower Hill Memorial, Trinity Square, London is the name of Second Officer Lothian Clark serving on S.S. Conch (London) with the Mercantile Marine who died 07/12/1916.

Lothian Clark was the second son of Christopher Grainger and Hannah Hodgson Clark.

He was born in Robin Hood’s Bay, Yorkshire, in 1886 and, like his brothers, Christopher and Edward seems to have been a seaman by trade.

He was serving as second officer on the  S.S. Conch, which was built by Swan Hunter at Wallsend as an oil tanker, when she was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel 10 nautical miles (19km)south of Poole, Dorset by SM UB-23 on the 7th December 1916, with the loss of 28 of her 31 crew.

The torpedo set light to the cargo of oil, and despite efforts to rescue the crew, only 3 survived. There is a description of the incident on Wikipedia. Lothian was married to Mary Jane Clark, nee Anderson and living at 14 Armstrong Terrace, South Shields.

Lothian Clark is remembered at East Boldon on E46.01, at West Boldon on W99.02 and W99.06 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
