In Kilrush Church Of Ireland Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave of First Mate Christopher Clarke serving on S.S. Eupion (London) with the Merchant Navy  who died 03/10/1918.

He was the son of Christopher Granger Clark and Hannah Hodgson Clark, of “Hazelwood,” Langholm Road, East Boldon, Sunderland. He was born at Robin Hood’s Bay, Yorkshire.

Christopher Clark, was the third son of Christopher Grainger and Hannah Hodgson Clark. His brothers Edward and Lothian also died in WW1.

His father was born in 1853  at Robin Hood’s Bay and married  Hannah in January 1881. Christopher was born in Robin Hood’s Bay, Yorkshire, in 1889. He and his brothers were in the Merchant Navy, and in 1911, the family was living in South Shields, Christopher was described on the census as a Seaman Ordinary. They seemed to be quite an extended family as there was Christopher, 5 sisters and other family members. Sometime later the family moved to “Hazelwood” Langholm Road. Again, I haven’t been able to pinpoint the exact house.

Christopher was killed when his ship, S.S. Eupion on which he was Third Mate, a steam-powered tanker en route from Philadelphia for Limerick carrying a cargo of oil, was sunk on 3rd October 1918 by a German U-boat ten miles off Loop Point, River Shannon, Ireland. He is buried in Kilrush, Church of Ireland Churchyard. His name inscribed on the Kilrush Memorial and on Tower Hill Memorial, Trinity Square, London with other members of the crew who were lost.
