On Tower Hill Memorial, Trinity Square, London is the name of Boatswain Edward Clark serving on S.S. Vine Branch (Sunderland) with the Mercantile Marine who died 11/04/1917.

He was the son of Christopher Granger Clark and Hannah Hodgson Clark, of “Hazelwood,” Langholm Road, East Boldon, Co. Durham. Born at Robin Hood’s Bay.

Edward Clark was the eldest son of Christopher Grainger and Hannah Hodgson Clark, nee Lothian and the brother of Christopher and Lothian.

He was born in Robin Hood’s Bay, Yorkshire, in 1884 and lived with his family. He, too was a seaman by profession and at the time of his death was a Boatswain (Bosun) on the S.S. Vine Branch, which was a Sunderland ship built by Doxford & Sons in 1898. They were en route from Valparaiso, Chile to Liverpool with a cargo of Nitrates and frozen Beef when the ship was attacked by the German submarine U-55 on 6th April 1917, approximately 400 miles to the southwest of Ireland.

Edward Clark is remembered at East Boldon on E46.01,  at West Boldon on W99.02 and W99.06 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
