On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of C/TD/40 Chief Petty Officer John Gibson serving on H.M.S. Jervis Bay with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 05/11/1940.

The son of William and Elizabeth Redpath Gibson, of Cleadon Park, Co. Durham.

The Shields Daily Gazette 18/11/1940 reports:-
No News of Shields Petty Officer
Relatives have so far received no news of John Gibson, son of Mr and Mrs W. Gibson of 205 King George Road, South Shields, a Chief Petty Officer on the Jervis Bay.

Mr Gibson who is 34 is unmarried. He was trained on H.M.S. training ship Satellite and in civil life is a moulder employed by Messrs C.W. Taylor and Son Ltd, iron founders of South Shields.

His relatives received a letter from him recently dated before the Jervis Bay’s gallant effort.

His brother William also died during WW2.
