In Kashmir India is the burial place of William Gibson who died 18/09/1943

The son of William and Elizabeth Redpath Gibson, of Cleadon Park, Co. Durham.

The Shields Daily Gazette 29/10/1943 reports with a photograph:-
Shields Man’s death in India
News has been received by cable from India of the death William Gibson, elder son Mr and Mr William Gibson, of 205 King George Road. South Shields.
Mr Gibson, who was 38, went to India October 1935, on a five year’s contract and for eight years he was employed by Messrs Burn and Co Ltd. At the time of his death he was foundry manager.
He was looking forward to coming home on leave when war broke out and his death occurred from heart failure four days after his arrival at Srinagar, Kashmir. India, where he had gone for two months’ holiday. Kashmir is about 2,000 miles from his Calcutta home.

KEEN RIFLEMAN
Mr Gibson, -who had many friends in South Shields, figured prominently as a marksman at Bisley and Ponteland and was a keen member the South Shields Miniature Rifle Club. He also represented H.M.S Satellite in local competitions.

His only brother, C.P.O. John Gibson, was lost when the Jarvis Bay was sunk in action three years ago. Both brothers served their apprenticeship at Messrs C. W. Taylor’s foundry.

His brother John also died in WW2.

William Gibson is remembered at South Shields on S86.098.
