On Lee on Solent War Memorial is the name of Lieutenant Hugh John Craufurd Walton-Wilson serving with the Royal Navy who died 17/09/1939.
He was the son of Hugh Wilson Walton-Wilson and Laline Isolda Walton-Wilson.
Hugh was born January 29th 1915. His parents had married in 1909. His father died in 1921.
In 1939 the family were at the Undershaw Hotel, Hazelmere. The included stepfather Frederick Crump, born 1855 with private means, mother Laline born 1877, sister Margaret Walton-Wilson born August 22nd 1917 and aunt Anne Walton-Wilson born 1875.
The Newcastle Journal 26/09/1939 reports:-
WALTON-WILSON.—On September 17th, reported missing in the loss of H.M.S. Courageous. Hugh John Craufurd Walton-Wilson. Lieut. R.N. only son of the late Hugh W. Walton-Wilson. of Shotley Hall, Shotley Bridge, Northumberland, and Mrs. Crump, Nab Cottage, Emsworth, Hants.
The Newcastle Chronicle 09/03/1940 reports:-
SHOTLEY BRIDGE Lieutenant Hugh John Craufurd Walton Wilson. R.N. of Shotley Hall. Shotley Bridge, and Bothal Castle, Morpeth, an observer on the aircraft carrier Courageous, who died at sea “on War service” on September 17 last, only son of the late Mr. Hugh Walton Wilson, of Shotley Hall, and of Mrs. Crump, of Nab Cottage. Emsworth, Hants., has left estate of the gross value of £91,253 11s 9d. with net personalty £29.694 9s (Estate duty £1.738 17s 4d.)
