The son of James William and Mary Jane Stockton, of West Hartlepool. His brother Leslie Stockton also died in WW2.

The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail 23/12/1943 reports:-
STOCKTON.—On December 22. suddenly in Cornwall (result of an accident) Private J. W. Stockton (better known as Barney), aged 26 years, dearly-beloved son Jimmy and Mary Stockton —Funeral arrangements later.
