In Kirkee War Cemetery, India is the Commonwealth War Grave of 215803 Sister Jessie Darnell, serving with the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service who died 14/10/1942.

She was the daughter of Robert and Catherine Darnell, of Acomb, York.

North Nurse Dies In India
News has been received from the War Office, of the death of Sister Jessie Darnell, youngest daughter Mr and Mrs R. Darnell, of 12 Estoril Road, Darlington and granddaughter of the late Mr and Mrs George Darnell, of North Shields.

Sister Darnell was educated at the Girls’ High School, Darlington. and chose the vocation of nursing for which she trained at Kirbymoorside Orthopaedic hospital and at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. Newcastle upon Tyne, from where she qualified as a State Registered Nurse.

Answering the call for Nursing Sisters for service abroad, she volunteered for Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service and went abroad in the spring of this year. She was serving the British Military Hospital Mhow, Central India, at the time her death.
