In Douglas Cemetery, Isle of Man is the Commonwealth War Grave of KX/344 Able Seaman James Daley, serving on H.M.S. Stephen Furness with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 13/12/1917.

Colin Boyd has supplied the following:

James was born on 1st August 1889. He was working as a miner living with his wife, Henrietta at 48, Rawdon Road, Wallsend when he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers on 4th September 1914.

He then transferred to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 9th September 1914 and joined the Hood Battalion on the same day. He was discharged to the Crystal Palace Maintenance Unit on 20th January 1915 and then was posted to HMS Victory.

James was killed in action when the Armed Boarding Steamer HMS Stephen Furness was sunk by a U boat in the Irish Sea on 13th December 1917.

James Daley is remembered at Wallsend on W7.21 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
