On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Second Mate Charles William Barlow, serving on S.S. Arca (London) with the Mercantile Marine, who died 02/10/1918.
The son of Dorothy Jane Barlow (nee Hepple), of 348, South Frederick Street, South Shields, and the late George Barlow. He was born at South Shields.
Charles William Barlow was born 1st August 1897 in South Shields.
He was aged 21, onboard the SS Arca, tanker (British-owned), sailing Philadelphia for the UK, torpedoed 40 miles NWxW of Tory Island by U-boat U-118 off the west coast of Scotland (all 52 crew lost).
The Tanker SS Arca was also damaged on the 6th January 1918 by an U-Boat UC-75, 10 miles off Start Point on its route from Southampton to Devonport.
