On Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire, is the name of Stoker First Class Charles Waugh, serving on H.M.S. Queen Mary with the Royal Navy  who died 31/05/1916.

Colin Boyd has provided the following :

Charles was born on 26th April 1893 in Pegswood, Northumberland to Robert Waugh, a coal miner and his wife Dora.  In 1911 the family had settled at 147, Lane Row, West Moor, Longbenton. The family was comprised of the parents, a married daughter with two children and three sons. Charles was working as a coal miner.

Charles enlisted in the Royal Navy on 10th December 1912 signing on for 12 years’ service when he was described as being 5 feet 3½ inches tall with brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion.

Charles was posted to HMS Queen Mary on 4th September 1913.  He was sentenced to seven days in cells on 25th March 1914. (no details given).

Charles was killed in action on 31st May 1916 when HMS Queen Mary exploded and sank during the opening phase of the Battle of Jutland with the loss of 1266 officers and ratings.

Morpeth Herald 07/07/1916 carries a brief obituary:
First-class Stoker Charles Waugh, son of Mr Robert Waugh, Frules Cottage, Forest Hall, lost with H.M.S. Queen Mary.
