and dedicated by Dr. Wild, Bishop of Newcastle.

Bronze (Faculty says “On a background of enamelled slate”).

Present Condition: Good.

Mr. William Donaldson, of Newcastle.

Ownership and Maintenance: Longbenton Parish Church.

To the glory of God
and in memory of the following men of this parish
who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War 1914-1919

Father in thy gracious keeping, leave we now thy servants sleeping.

This tablet is the gift of Ruby Longhurst,
widow of Major Roy Creasey Longhurst of this Parish
who died on March 8th 1918 in his 30th year.

Memorial Description:

Plaque, 35 inches at its highest point x 50 inches wide (89cms x 127cms) on a black polished slate pattress, 37 inches high x 52 inches wide (94cms x 132cms) with curved centre top.

Across the top is a raised border of leaves.

At centre top is depicted a cross on a hill with a sunburst behind.

The dedication is below this, followed by the names listed in six columns, divided by vertical lines.

The quotation follows this, and the details of the gift of the plaque.

At the bottom are sprays of palm leaves.

All patterns and lettering are raised; all lettering is in Roman capitals.

Notes:

1. One newspaper reference describes the memorial as ‘of chaste design, composed of electric deposit bronze with black back. The careful use of each ornamental element expresses delicacy of feeling’.

2. Mary Robina (Ruby) Longhurst is buried in the family plot with her husband. She died 18th February 1979, aged 80. See his Every Name a Story entry.

3. John Usher Reavley is also remembered on Every Name a Story, however his surname is spelt incorrectly.
