OVINGHAM

Vickers, G.R., 2nd Lieut., 1918
In Lillers Communal Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Second Lieutenant Godfrey Raymond Vickers, serving with the Royal Flying Corps who died 06/01/1918.

He was a school teacher at Ovingham School. A photo can be seen in The Story of Ovingham on Tyne: a village history Frank Atkinson, Northern Books, 2001, ISBN 0953 5730 1 X

The Illustrated Chronicle 16/01/1918, page 3 carries a brief obituary:

"Second-Lieut. Godfrey Raymond Vickers, R.F.C., who was killed in action on January 6, was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Vickers, The Schoolhouse, Ovington, Prudhoe. He took an enthusiastic interest in the Boy Scout movement. He joined the Durham University O.T.C. in 1916, and in March, 1917, entered the R.F.C."
