In Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe, is the Commonwealth War grave of 21/90 Robert Ernest Rix, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 21st Battalion who died 27/06/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Robert Ernest Rix was born in 1896 at Widdrington, Morpeth. His mother, Alice Ann Rix, was from Norfolk and his father, George Henry Rix, was born in London.

In 1901 Robert’s family was living at The Cottage, Widdrington, when Robert was five years old. His father was a coal miner and the following children were in the household: William 15, Rebecca 13, Frederick 12, Charles 10, Annie 8, Harriet 3 and Alice aged 1.

The 1911 Census shows Robert, aged 16, living at Bomarsund, Stakeford where he was a pony driver in the coal mines. The family address at this time was 2, East Terrace, Boulmersund Northumberland, a village close to Bedlington. The records show there were 13 in the family living in this house in 5 rooms.

Military documents show that Robert enlisted at Bedlington and died of wounds at 38Ccs (Casualty Clearing Station). On his death his effects went to his father George H Rix; his pension records indicate only his mother so it’s very unlikely Robert was married.

Robert Ernest Rix is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06, in Stakeford on S71.02 and in West Sleekburn on W34.01
