Yule, G.G., Pte., 1915
In Dartford (East Hill) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of M2/048199 Private George Gladstone Yule, serving with the Army Service Corps, who died 09/03/1915.

Alnwick Gazette Almanack 1916 page 5 reports: March 11th 1915: “Military funeral at Dartford of G.G. Yule, A.S.C. of Eglingham”

Ian Sim has provided the following:

George’s family came from the Scottish borders, his father being born in Earlston. George was born in 1885 at Crailing, near Kelso. The family all seem to have been coachmen and in 1911 were living in Beadnell at 2, The Village. This is the house next to the present Crewe House, which in those days was the village school and housed the village reading room. At the outbreak of the war George was employed as a chauffeur at Redgate Hall, Wolsingham, County Durham.

George joined up, aged 30, on the 2nd February 1915 and was posted to the Army Service Corps Mechanical Transport Section at Grove Park in London for training. This was a logical posting for George as the men serviced and drove the army’s motor transport. George died, barely a month later, in Heath Close Hospital, Dartford Heath, Dartford, Kent on the 2nd March 1915. His death certificate notes that he had contracted cerebro-spinal meningitis, a condition that invariably ended in death in those days. He is buried in East Hill Cemetery, Dartford.

George’s elder brother Andrew also served in the army. He was killed on 16th August 1917 at Flanders in Belgium.

George Gladstone Yule is recorded in A11.56 as coming from Beadnell.

He is remembered at Beadnell on B10.01 and B10.02 and at Wolsingham on W128.02 and W128.05
