In Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 2797 Private Joseph Bowden, serving with the 1st/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 15/02/1916.

Morpeth Herald 10/03/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Sapper [sic] J. Bawdon [sic], 7th N.F., of Hirst, has died of wounds.

He was the husband of Isa Bowden, of 179 Hawthorn Road, Hirst, Ashington.

In St.James's Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

In memory
of
John Brewis son of
Tho. & Isa Bowden
of S. Charlton died Dec.
4 1880 aged ?7 months
Joseph their son
killed in France
1917 aged 24
(the rest is hidden by flowers)

It seems there is a discrepancy in the year of death. CWGC says 1916, but the headstone says 1917.

Joseph Bowden is remembered in South Charlton on S39.01, in Ashington on A17.43 and at Hirst on H62.10, at Alnwick in A11.56 page 64 and in A11.59
