COCKERTON

Graham, W.H., Pte., 1918
At Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt, Somme is the Commonwealth War Grave of 43121 Private Walter Harry Graham serving with the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 24/08/1918.

Lorna Wilkinson has submitted the following:-

Walter Harry Graham was born in 1897 at Spennymoor the eldest son of Thomas and Maggie Graham. His father was a steel smelter and there were three younger brothers and a sister. In 1911 they lived at 53, Forcett Street, Cockerton.

Later Harry worked at Messrs. Ord and Maddison and was an apprentice in the Moulding Shop.

Harry enlisted at Darlington and joined the Durham Light Infantry.

The War diary for the 24th August 1918 has an account of the fighting but Harry is not mentioned by name.

Thanks to Stephen Nicholson for his help and assistance.

Harry Graham photo from The Evening Despatch 30/06/1917. It looks as if Harry Graham was wearing 'hospital blue' and so might have been wounded.

Walter Harry Graham is remembered at Cockerton, C119.02, Darlington War Memorial Hospital D40.34 and Darlington Library’s Roll of Honour D40.67

Personal note. When the Methodist church was altered in 1976 no thought was given to the Memorial Window and Plaque which were thought to be in the way. Harry’s younger brother, Tommy, was very upset about this as he remembered his parents contributing to the cost of the memorial. Fortunately the plans were altered and the memorial saved for future generations.
