Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:
George Fenwick was the eldest son of Ralph and Mary Ann Fenwick. He was born at Ryhope in 1897.
In 1901 the family were living in the front section of a back to back house at 38 Burdon Street Ryhope.
By 1911 the family had moved to 28 Garden Place Old Penshaw. Ralph was a Coal Miner.
When war broke out in 1914 George enlisted at Shiney Row and joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He went to the Balkans 17th October 1915.
In August 1916 George was posted as missing.
The Sunderland Echo 18/01/1917 reads-
Mr Ralph Fenwick of 41 South View Shiney Row has received official news that his son Private George Fenwick of the Royal Inniskillings previously reported missing died of gas poisoning August 9th 1916.
His parents added to his headstone the words- "Father in their gracious keeping leave we now our son sleeping".
George Fenwick is remembered at Shiney Row on S124.01 S124.03 and S124.08 and at Herrington on H137.04
