On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of Second Lieutenant William Ernest Avery, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

The following has been submitted by Reg. Hornsby:

2nd Lieutenant William Ernest Avery
Unit: 16th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, 96th Brigade, 32nd Division

Supplementary Notes:
1. 2nd Lieut. Avery was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme as the 16th Battalion attacked the enemy positions to the south-west of Thiepval.

2. Prior to enlisting he was under-manager at Bewicke Main Colliery, near Birtley.

William Ernest Avery is remembered at Newcastle on NUT009 at Gateshead on G39.030 and at Birtley on B127.01 and B127.06
