Welford, J., Sgt,, 1918
On Pozieres Memorial is the name of 45464 Sergeant John Welford serving with 19th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 29/03/1918.

Brenda McMahon submitted the following :-

John was born to parents James and Isabella (nee Graham) in 1892 at Auckland Park. The couple had 10 children but 3 had died by 1911. On 1911 census his remaining siblings included Fanny May (pea packer), Polly and James. His mother Isabella died in 1905 when John was only 13 years old.

John worked as a stoneman in coal mine whilst his father and brother James both worked as coal miners underground.

John enlisted at Bishop Auckland to serve with 19th Durham Light Infantry.

He was killed in action on 29 March 1918 age 26.

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

His brother James also died in WW1.

John Welford is remembered at Auckland Park on A42.01 at Bishop Auckland on B140.12 and B140.03

He is also remembered in The DLI Book of Remembrance and in the 19th DLI Book of Remembrance page 66
