Private John James

On Helles Memorial is the name of 14766 Private John James serving with the 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment died 26/10/1915.

Isabel Field has submitted the following:

John James was the second of five sons of William and Isabella James. He was born 18th November 1896 at Londonderry Pit Pittington.

John worked as a miner until the out break of war in August 1914. He joined the East Yorkshire Regiment at Durham on the 9th November 1914. His Attestation form was signed by a relative who knew John was under age.

After training John was sent to Gallipoli arriving 7th October 1915.

John was killed 26th October 1915. Initially buried in a small cemetery at Karakal Gap. After hostilities ceased the bodies were uplifted and taken elsewhere. John is now listed as having no known grave.

John, his brother George and cousin John Watson Cummings are remembered on the two Hallgarth memorials H143.01, H143.02 and at Littletown L75.01
