Every Name a Story

On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France is the name of 23/591 Lance Corporal Henry Appleby, serving with the 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

He was the husband of Sarah Ellen Appleby, of 7, Nevada Street, Greenwich, London.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Henry was born in Lumley, County Durham in 1879 to Thomas and Catherine Appleby. He was one of at least 9 children and his father was an agricultural labourer.

In 1881 the family were living on a farm at Fence Houses. In 1891 they were on a farm near Harton in South Shields.

Henry moved across the Tyne about the turn of the century and in 1903 he married Ellen Dixon from Barrington and they had five children; Henrietta (1904), Ernest (1906), William (1908), Florence (1909) and Harold (1912).  At the time of the 1911 census Henry was living at 234, Yard Row, Netherton Colliery and working as a Stationary Engine man.

Graham Appleby has submitted the following:

I was sent a link to this entry.  Henry Appleby is one of my great-grandfathers; Ernest was my grandfather. These are a few details which I hold: He was born in Cocken, Co. Durham January 9th 1879 and married Sarah Ellen Dixon in December 1903.  He enlisted in the 4th Tyneside Scottish; 23rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and was part of D Company. As noted, he was killed on the first day of the Somme (01/07/1916). To have a face to the name! I’ve been looking for a photo of him for a long time.

Henry Appleby is remembered at Barrington on B96.02, and at  Bedlington on B15.07 and B15.26 page 121.
