In Hersin Communal Cemetery Extension, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 79709 Sapper Frederick Morley, serving with the 176th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers who died 09/07/1916.

Sapper F Morley, of Barnard Castle, Killed in Action. Mr & Mrs Morley of Pearson Terrace, Barnard Castle, received information from the War Office, on Thursday, that their son, Sapper Frederick Morley, of the Royal Engineers, had been killed in action by an enemy mine explosion on July 9th. The deceased soldier enlisted at Richmond two years before the outbreak of the war, and then went to Hartlepool, being at the latter town during the bombardment. After leaving Hartlepool he was sent to the front, where he has been for nearly a year. He was 22 years of age, married, but had no family. Previous to enlistment he worked at the office of this journal and also at Winston colliery.

In a letter from the front previously to his father which was printed in the Teesdale Mercury he writes about the deprivation experienced by some soldiers:- “We get plenty of cigs, but a tin of cake would come in all right. Would you please send me a tin of cocoa if that is not asking too much. We do not receive any money so you see we cannot buy anything.”

He was a recipient of the 1915 Star, the Victory Medal and British War Medal.

His widow Elizabeth nee Watson was living at 63 Shildon Street, North Road, Darlington at the end of the war. They had married in Teesdale in Summer 1915.
