On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Apprentice Edward Goodfellow, serving on S.S. Embassage  with the Merchant Navy, who died 27/08/1941.

He was the son of Luke Weatheritt Goodfellow and Eva Goodfellow, of Alnwick, Northumberland.

In St. Mary’s churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

Colin Boyd says that Edward Goodfellow’s next of kin was his father, and they lived at 20 Stott Street, Alnwick. When his medals were sent to his father, he now had a new address of 10 Bondgate Within, Alnwick.

Apprentice Goodfellow was posted as missing presumed drowned when the S.S. Embassage, owned by Hall Bros. Ltd. of Newcastle, was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean by U-557. The Master, 32 crew members and six gunners were lost.

John Knight has explained the change of address:

Edward’s parents lived at 20, Stott Street but owned a tobacconists at 10, Bondgate Within, which explains why Edward’s medals were sent there. Today it is a Chinese restaurant.

It has been reported that there were 3 survivors from the “Embassage” who were picked up on 31st August by HMCS Assiniboine and landed in Greenock.

R.C. Fenwick states that he was the youngest man from Alnwick to die.
