On Chatham Memorial is the name of Warrant Engineer Charles Driver serving on H.M.S. Monmouth with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 01/11/1914.

Charles was the son of Joseph and Frances Driver of 17 York Street Jarrow (1901 and 1911 census). In 1911 Charles was a Marine Engineer.

An Engineer residing at 27 York Street, Jarrow, he was Initiated on the 29th November 1905 (aged 26); Passed 28th February 1906 and Raised on the 28th March 1906 into St Bede 1119 Lodge of Freemasons at Jarrow.

He died on the 1st November 1914 when H.M.S. Monmouth a Monmouth class armoured cruiser launched in 1901 was sunk by the German armoured cruiser Scharnhorst at the Battle of Coronel in the South Pacific. She was manned by a crew of reservists and cadets under the command of Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Craddock commanding a squadron of ageing ships.

The Newcastle Journal 20/11/1914 reads-
Warrant Officer C.W. Driver who is well known in Jarrow was one of the crew of H.M.S. Monmouth. For sometime past Mr Driver has resided in London.

Charles Driver is remembered at Jarrow on J2.10 and J2.51 in the Masonic Roll of Honour 1914-18 (London) and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
