In Bishop Auckland Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of J/62218 Able Seaman Arthur Millmoor, serving on H.M.S. Caledon with the Royal Navy  who died 19/06/1918.

The son of Thomas and Martha Jane Millmoor, of The Bungalow, Hestobel Gardens, Bishop Auckland.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory
of
our dearly beloved son
Arthur Millmoor A.B.
H.M.S. Caledon
who was called to higher service
June 19th 1918 aged 25 years

H.J.M. has provided the following:

Arthur was the son of Thomas and Martha Jane Millmoor of Witton Park in November 1892. The family lived in Rose Cottage on Church Street when Arthur was eight. His only sibling Emily was twelve. A move to Raby Gardens ensued, by which time an eighteen year old Arthur was an ironmonger’s apprentice.

The Royal Navy War Graves Roll has his death recorded on Hospital Ship Soudan and his Mother was notified of his death – due to erysipelas and general septicaemia – whilst she was living at Westfield Road, Bishop Auckland.

Arthur Millmoor is remembered at South Church on S144.01 and S144.05, at Bishop Auckland on B140.24 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
