Cross of Saxon type, 17 feet high (5.2m).
It weighs 71 tons.
There are carvings raised in half relief on tapering shaft.
Set on a narrow pedestal on a deeper one, and with two steps, inside in a kerb which echoes the shape of the junctions of the pathways where the cross in situated. The are occupied is approx. 35 square feet.
The wording is carried on the faces of all the top three pedestals.
The dedication is on the top, the names are in four columns on the large plinth, in six columns on the lower plinth.
Lettering is in sans serif capitals throughout.
“The memorial is a faithful reproduction of Saxon crosses. There are 21 panels, of which the principal one, on the face, is reproduced from a portion of a fine Saxon cross preserved in the Parish Church. The central panel at the back contains a beautifully executed vine pattern design of foliage and fruit, while the remainder of the panels have interlaced designs.” (Auckland and County Chronicle)

1. Brig. Gen. Cumming, in unveiling the cross, said that he had served with the Durham Light Infantry for 30 years, and it was with sorrowful pride that he performed that last token of respect to those gallant men.
