In Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 12668/DA Second Hand Cuthbert George Edwin Wright, serving on H.M.S. Victory with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 20/10/1918.

The son of Alexander and Lucy Wright, of 4, Rose Cottage, Newton by the Sea, Christon Bank, Northumberland.

In Embleton (Spitalford) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

youngest and dearly beloved
daughter of
Alexander & Lucy Wright,
who died Dec. 26, 1917, aged 15 years.

Also William their son, and beloved
husband of Ursula G. Wright,
Deck Hand, H.M.S. Harvest Moon,
who died Oct. 14, 1918, aged 30 years.

Also C.G.E. Wright, their son,
2nd Hand H.M.T. Eccleshill,
who died Oct. 20. 1918, aged 20 years,
interred at the Naval Cemetery, Gosport.

Also of Lucy, beloved wife of
Alexander Wright
of Newton by the Sea
who died April 1, 1933, aged 67 years.

who died Aug.17. 1934, aged 67 years.

Cuthbert George Edwin Wright was born on 25 July 1898, at Newton by the Sea, Embleton, Northumberland, the youngest son of Alexander (b. about 1867; at Embleton; an Inshore Coast Fisherman) and Lucy (b. about 1865; at Brechin, Forfarshire, Scotland) Wright, of 4, Rose Cottage, Newton by the Sea.

Six siblings:  Christianna (b. about 1884; who lived away from the family in 1911, perhaps through marriage); William (b. about 1889; an Inshore Coast Fisherman); John A. (b. about 1890; not mentioned in the 1911 Census); Catherine Jane (b. about 1893; a Farm Worker); Aina A. A. (b. about 1896; a Dressmaker’s Apprentice in 1911); and Lily Eveline (b. about 1903; still at school).  All were born at Newton by the Sea.

Wright was still at school in 1911 but there’s every reason to believe he’ll have followed his father and brother into Inshore Coastal Fishing on completion of his education.

One of two sons lost:   William Wright died 14 October 1918.  The brothers died less than a week apart.

Died in the Royal Navy Hospital at Haslar, Portsmouth, from pneumonia.
