b. Unveiled 25th September 1949 by Capt. J.S. Salter, DSO, RN (husband of Viscount Grey’s niece)

Freestone from Greenlaw Quarry, Whittingham, owned by J.G. Green & Sons, Warkworth.

Public subscription.

Sculptor, Artist or Designer:

Made by J.G. Green & Sons, Warkworth, owners of the quarry from which the stone was taken.
The carving was done by J.P. Whittle & Sons, Amble.
Designer – Messrs. Knowles, Oliver and Leeson, Newcastle.

Memorial Description:

Cross.

This memorial takes the form of an octagonal shaft with the cross and stands upon an octagonal pedestal and plinth.

The height is 18 feet (5.5m).

At the foot of the shaft on the East and West sides are two sunken arched decorated panels, one containing the dedication, the other containing the words “Lest We Forget”.

On the base are inscribed the names of the fallen from Embleton, Christon Bank, Falloden, Craster, Dunstan, Brunton, Stamford and Newton by the Sea.

The lettering and ornament are in Tudor style.

Notes:

1. After 1939-45, the cross was renovated by C.S. Ormerod Ltd., Memorial Artists and Craftsmen, Irton Street, Gosforth.
