Every Name a Story

On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Fireman and Trimmer Charles Hutton Kane, serving on  S.S. Radhurst (London) with the Merchant Navy who died 21/02/1943.

The son of George Hutton Kane and Mary Kane, of South Shields, Co. Durham.

His father George Hutton Kane and brother Walter Kane also died in WW2.

Charles Hutton Kane was a fireman and trimmer on board the S.S. Radhurst (formerly called the Sava). On February 20th 1943 she was torpedoed by U-Boat 525, commanded by Korvettenkapitn Hans-Joachim Drewitz, after being a straggler from convoy ONS 165. All 38 crew were lost as the ship sunk in less than three minutes.

Charles Hutton Kane is remembered at Westoe in W101.08, page 45, and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
