On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of P/MX 55400 Leading Supply Assistant Eric William Anthony Searle Pape, serving on H.M.S. Royal Oak with the Royal Navy who died 14/10/1939.

The son of William A. D. and Elizabeth M. Pape, of Blackhill, Co. Durham.

Eric Pape was associated with the 1st Shincliffe Group of Scots and appears in the Scout Roll of Honour 1939-45.

The Blaydon Courier 19/10/1939 reports:-
ERIC PAPE. The death is officially announced, by Admiralty telegram, of Eric William Pape. aged 20, of 22, Queen’s Road, Blackhill. He was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs, W, A. D, Pape, and in July was transferred from H.M.S. Hawkins as a leading supply assistant after approximately two years’ service in the Navy. He was a pupil of Durham Johnston School and had many friends in Consett area where his father, as clerk to the local education committee, came in 1936.
