Memorial Description

Table model of a 2-pounder gun set on a tapered granite base. The dedication is on a silver hall-marked plaque on the top in sans serif capitals and italic lower case letters. The sides of the base each bear a plaque which carries the names in a single column on each.

Sir Robert Chapman C.L. C.M.G. C.B.E. D.S.O. T.D. / Vice-Lieutenant of Durham / 22nd September 1951.

Notes

1. This item is lent to the Museum by a Silver Trust.

2. This local unit was raised in 1939. It was sent to the Far East in 1942, the ship was attacked by the Japanese on the way to Singapore and the regiment captured in February 1942.

3. The memorial is to 197 men who died in action or as Japanese Prisoners of War.

4. There is a private publication, compiled about 1947, author unknown, consisting of a Roll of Honour and a list of POW's from the Far East, including some photos of those who served. See S140.147.
