Notes

1. "Recently a specially interesting memorial was unveiled at Newcastle to the men of one particular steamship line (the Moor Line) who lost their lives". This statement was included in an article about the lack of a national memorial to the Mercantile Marine in Shields Daily News Thursday 10/12/1925.

2. Moor Line had 40 ships, of which 18 were sunk during the war. 8 others, principally owned by Sir Walter Runciman, were also sunk.

3. Of those who died, 58 officers and men died afloat, and eight of the office staff were killed on land.

4. Much effort had gone into finding relatives of the dead men to invite them to the unveiling ceremony, but an invitation to any relatives who had not been contacted but wished to attend was offered if they contacted the office.

5. This Memorial is linked to the WW2 Moor Line Remembrance Book NUT136.
