Every Name a Story

On Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France is the name of 25/932 Private Joseph William Davey serving with 25th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish) who died 01/07/1916.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Joseph was the eldest son of parents Jonathan (from Ipswich) and Sarah Ann (nee Waites). He was born at Wrekenton in 1896 where the family lived at Chowdean Cottages, Low Fell. The couple had 5 children together but unfortunately Charles died in 1911 aged about 5 years. His remaining siblings were :- George Edward, Sarah, John Robert and Frederick.

The 1911 census shows both Jonathan and his son working as coal miners. Jonathan as a hewer whilst Joseph (aged 14) was in the coal mine as a driver. The family was living in 2 rooms at 4 Coronation Terrace Low Fell at that time.

Joseph enlisted into the army at Newcastle. Unfortunately, very few records for this soldier have survived.  Suffice it to say he died at the Somme on 1 July 1916.

Medals :-British War Medal; Victory Medal

His brother, George was also killed in 1918.

Joseph Davey is remembered at Gateshead on G39.004 and G39.064
