On the Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of C/JX 217100 Able Seaman William Henry Wilkinson serving with the Royal Navy who died 13/10/1942.

In Houghton le Spring (Durham Road) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
a devoted
wife and darling mother
Alice Eleanor Wilkinson
died 26th November 1974
aged 90 years.

Also Henry, her beloved husband,
and a dear Dad
died 12th March 1980
aged 93 years.

Also William Henry,
son of the above
lost at sea 12th October 1942
aged 33 years.

Convoy SC-104 of 48 ships on route from Cape Breton, USA to the UK was targeted by a wolf pack of 10 U-boats and 18 ships were sunk south of Greenland between 12 and 16th October 1942. The Nellie, a Greek owned merchant steamship, was hit on the port side by two torpedoes from U-607 and sank within 12 minutes, 32 of the crew were killed and the five survivors were picked up by British rescue ship Gothland
