In Westoe Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Able Seaman W.illiam Hails Taylor, serving on S.S. Phare with the Mercantile Marine  who died 31/10/1917.

The headstone reads:-

in his 31st year

aged 70 years
