On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of P/KX122259 Stoker 1st Class Walter Connor Pounder serving on H.M.S. Eagle with the Royal Navy who died 11/08/1942.

The son of Thomas Connor Pounder and Elizabeth Pounder and the husband of Lillian Pounder of Pelton Co Durham.

Walter was born August 14th 1907. In 1939 he was living at 10 Pelton Lane Ends he was a permanent Way Labourer on the Railway. His wife Lilian was born February 14th 1902.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 03/09/1942 reports:-
Pounder Pelton. 7 Michael’s Villas. 1st Class Stoker H.M.S. Eagle, killed in action Aug. 1942 aged 35 years. Walter Connor Pounder, beloved husband of Lilian (nee Wright).
Will always be remembered by his sorrowing wife, father and mother-in-law. God’s greatest gift Remembrance.

POUNDER. 1st Class Stoker H.M.S Eagle, killed in action  Aug. 1942 aged 35 years, Walter Connor Pounder. beloved eldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Connor Pounder.
Will never be forgotten by his father, mother, brothers, sisters, brother in-law also grandad Pounder, aunt Mary, uncle Ted nephew John Cooper. The Lord gave and the Lord taketh away.

Walter Connor Pounder is remembered at West Pelton on W112.03  and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
