The son of James and Mary Elizabeth Charlton, of Southwick, Sunderland.

Liberator VIII – Serial KH125 – 53 Sqdn. This plane on its way to India with a Polish crew left Merryfield aerodrome near Ilminster one foggy morning and failed to gain sufficient height.  It crashed into a field at Castle farm, Buckland St Mary in Somerset, killing 26 occupants immediately and one person died on the way to hospital.

The Sunderland Echo 28/11/1945 reports:-
ROLL OF HONOUR CHARLTON. Accident Nov. 22 years, William Armstrong (Royal Signals), beloved son of James and late Mary Charlton. Interment Mere Knolls Thursday, leaving 39 James Court, 1.15. Service High Southwick Method Church.

William Armstrong Charlton is remembered at Southwick on S130.22 and in Peter Gibson’s book.
