In the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium is the name of 17348 Private William Wynn, serving with the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 24/05/1915.

William Wynn was born on the 29th January 1880, at Southwick, the eldest son of Michael Wynn of Southwick on Wear, Caulker, and his wife Margaret, daughter of Thomas Storey, of Southwick on Wear, Durham.

William was educated at the Council Board School at Southwick, and was employed at Priestman’s Yard at Sunderland.

William married at Southwick Parish Church on the 1st January 1907, Ada, (15 Ogle Terrace, Southwick on Wear), daughter of Edward Arthur Hatley, also of Southwick on Wear. They had three children, Michael born 10th December 1913, William born 29th June 1915 and Ruth born 15th April 1912.

William was also the secretary of the Southwick Football Club. He enlisted on the 11th February 1915 at Sunderland, and was trained at Newcastle and East Boldon.

After the Battle of Hill 60 at Ypres, on the 24th May 1915, he was officially reported as missing, and has now been presumed he was killed there that day.
