The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 11/06/1940 reports:-
BODY IN TYNE: CAUSE OF DEATH UNKNOWN
At a North Shields inquest to-day on William Sarginson (30), naval fireman and trimmer (sic), Mr. P. M. Dodds (Coroner for South Northumberland) returned verdict that the man was found dead floating in the River Tyne on June 9, the body being too decomposed to ascertain the cause of death.” John Edward Casson, of Hylton Street, North Shields, said he last saw Sarginson on May 10 when he left witnesses’ house to go on board his ship.
