On Chatham, Naval Memorial is the name of SS/106966 Stoker 1st Class Walter Murray, serving with the Royal Navy who died 22/09/1914.

I have encountered another death which is right on the edge of my Family History

Walter Murray was a stoker on HMS Cressy which was sunk on 22 09 1914. In 1911, he had married Martha Ross in 1911.
As far as I can tell, their first daughter was born early in the summer of 1914 (I have ordered her birth certificate).
After Walter’s death, Martha married Adam Rayne and his grandmother was Margaret Semmence (nee Richardson).
I have a copy of the 1921 census record for Adam. It shows him, his wife, his step-daughter, his daughter and, finally, his father-in-law, Edward Ross.

The Jarrow Express 25/09/1914 reports:-
NORTH SEA NAVAL DISASTER.
Jarrow Men Missing.
Among the men reported missing from the cruisers Cressey and Aboukir which were torpedoed and sunk by German submarines in the North Sea, are Walter Murray, stoker, of the Cressey residing at Union Street Jarrow and William Burdiss of the cruiser Aboukir stoker residing at 13 Chaytor Street. Both men were naval reservists and had gone for their annual training just before the war broke out.
