HMS Sunhill was an accommodation ship based at Portsmouth for men conscripted into Mercantile Marine Reserve who had no prior naval training.  They stayed before joining   whatever ship had a vacancy to fill, and would have also been kitted out with their uniform and given some idea of what was expected of them at sea.

William John Harvey is remembered in our List of Ships’ Crews.
