On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of 3384S Stoker William Bean, serving on H.M.S. Natal with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 30/12/1915.

The Stockton Herald, South Durham and Cleveland Advertiser 15/01/1916 reports:-
BEAN William beloved husband of Margaret Bean, 13 Beech Street Stockton killed by explosion on H.M.S. Natal December 30th Mourned by his sorrowing wife and all friends
“He did his duty.”
