On the Loos Memorial, France is the name of 19588 Private Thomas Holt Charlton, serving with the 10th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) who died 25/09/1915.

The son of Mrs. Ann Charlton, of 49, Thomas Street South, Southwick, Sunderland.

Thomas Holt Charlton was the second son of James Parker Charlton, of Southwick on Wear who was a Shipyard Labourer, and his wife Ana [sic] (21 Thomas Street, Southwick on Wear), daughter of James Holt of Oldham.

Thomas was born 15th September 1894, and was educated at the National School in Southwick. He was employed at Pickergill’s Shipyard at Sunderland.

He resided at 49, Thomas Street South, Southwick, Sunderland, with his wife Ann.

He had enlisted on the 1st February 1915, and arrived at the front on the 2nd August 1915.

Thomas was killed in action at the Battle of Loos 25th September 1915. He was buried on a farm near Loos just behind the firing line.

He was the brother of William Mustard Charlton

The CWGC entry and all other records give his name as “Charlton” only De Ruvigny uses Charleton.
